Ada juga yang menafsirkan bahwa batu tersebut adalah batu yang dibakar ( matbukh ). Batu tersebut digunakan untuk melempar pasukan gajah tersebut. Lantas mereka hancur seperti daun-daun yang dimakan dan diinjak-injak oleh hewan. Allah memberi pertolongan dari kejahatan pasukan gajah tersebut.

Penamaan al-Fil untuk surat ini diambil dari ayat pertama yang terkandung di dalamnya frase Ashab al-Fil "Pasukan Gajah". Surat ini merujuk kepada penyerangan yang ingin dilakukan oleh pasukan Habsyah terhadap Mekah di tahun 570 Masehi, tahun kelahiran Nabi Muhammad SAW.
